  HarlequinHarlequin first appeared in the early 16th century as one of the recognisable servant characters played by the Commedia dell Árt (theatre of the professional).
Together with familiar names as Pierrot, Punch and Columbine, these characters worn masks and flamboyant costumes and were the start of comedy entertainment. Commedia created lasting influences on Shakespeare, Moliére, Opera, musical theatre and sit coms and many of its themes are still used and enjoyed today.
